Auto7th and 8th Grade Social Studies classes are well into their units on Thinking like a Geographer and 8th Grade is beginning their look into Colonization & Settlement. Last week 7th Grade students began work on their own Autobiography Map, a map of an island that represents them! Students will continue work on this project this week and the finished map will be due Monday, September 30th. 8th Graders will start the week learning about the Columbian Exchange and its impact on the New World.
8th Graders have a Quizizz due by Monday night with the code 757113, make sure it is completed with 100% correct! This Monday, 9/23, is High School night in the cafeteria from 5-7. It's never too early for students to start thinking about where they'd like to go after next year! Here we go into our first full week of school! Hopefully students are adjusting well to the new schedule; we have a big week ahead of us! 7th and 8th Graders will be taking their first quiz of the year and this will be our first grade for the trimester. Students added vocabulary terms to their Interactive Notebooks last week that will be the basis for our vocabulary quizzes on Thursday for 7th Grade and Friday for 8th Grade. Students can create vocabulary flashcards to prepare for this quiz; because the words have been copied into their INBs they will not be permitted to use their notebooks on this quiz. How can students best prepare for their quizzes for my class? Quizizz! I create Quizizz games for each quiz or test I give to students and Quizizz is an invaluable way to prepare for my assessments. Students were given the Quizizz codes in class last week, but I also send this code on Remind each week. Please make sure you are signed up for Remind! Our week will look like this:
We have a N.U.T. Day coming up this Friday! Students may wear any school appropriate attire. The cost is $2 to participate. Have a great week! Students have successfully made it through the first week of school! Students have done a wonderful job adjusting to their new schedules and routines, and I am very proud to the see the behavior and environment in 7th & 8th Grade this year. On Tuesday, students in 8th Grade have a signed syllabus due to me that will be returned once checked. 7th Grade will have their signed syllabus due on Wednesday when we meet again. I am very proud to see that many in my homeroom turned their papers in early! Way to go 7th grade! This week will begin our movement into content for Social Studies this year. Both grades will begin the week with their pretest to determine what standards require attention throughout the year. Students in 7th Grade will be working on reviewing the 5 Themes of Geography beginning our focus on location with a few hands-on activities. We will be working on this concept throughout next week as well. 8th Graders will be working in groups to begin "Thinking Like Historians" to evaluate sources and determine credibility. We have a lot of great activities planned to make 7th and 8th Grade Social Studies awesome this year. It was nice meeting so many of you during Meet & Greet on Thursday night. For those who were not able to attend, here is some important information that you will need.
1. There are 3 important papers that will need to be filled out and returned to school: 1) Yellow emergency card, 2) Signature page of student handbook (please note, there are no paper copies of the handbook this year, you will need to go online to review policies/procedures) and 3) Student information sheet for 7th grade teachers 2. PLEASE sign up for Remind (see side bar) or in the Links tab. I cannot stress how important signing up for Remind will be in order to stay on top of things. I use it for homework reminders, upcoming assessments and special events. 3. Please check out my "About Mrs. Davis" tab for a little bit about me. 4. We will continue to use Interactive Notebooks this year, which students keep in the classroom most days (with the exception of studying for tests). Students need to have a composition notebook with all pages numbered by Wednesday for 7th Grade and Thursday for 8th Grade. In class this week we will spend time learning our new schedules (2 specials/day and new times for classes and lunch/recess) as well as procedures. We will also be sharing information about ourselves to get to know each other and playing "Two Truths, One Lie: Social Studies Edition" to get acquainted with Geography and History. Next week we will head straight into covering content and our Pretest from Social Studies. It is sure to be a great two weeks! Greetings! We only have three weeks to go! We begin this week with our 7th Grade Service Learning Field Trip to Akridge Scout Reservation where students will be learning about community involvement and how to be a good citizen. Students will also get a chance to help the environment and get their hands dirty by planting some trees!
Students in 7th Grade this week will be taking their Social Studies State Test on May 22nd (Mrs. Wood's homeroom) and May 23rd (Mr. Persinger's and Mrs. Davis'). 8th Graders in Social Studies will have class on Tuesday and Friday, where we will be working on our last project, a Civil War Lesson students will be designing themselves. 8th Grade is nearing closer and closer to graduation and we will be ending our year with a fun opportunity for students: next week we will begin working on a Student-Created Lesson Project on the aspect of Civil War history of each group's choice. Students can teach about Civil War medicine, battles, women in the Civil War, African American soldiers, etc. This will be a great way for students to end the year showing what they have learned! On Monday, May 20, the 7th graders will be participating in a Service Learning field trip at Akridge Scout Reservation in Dover. They will be planting trees and learning about citizenship skills. Please ensure permission forms are signed and returned to school as soon as possible. This Friday, 5/10 is a N.U.T. Day (to support Athletics)! Have a great week! Hello again! I hope everyone had a restful and enjoyable Spring Break. This week we begin our Smarter Balanced CAT testing for MATH! Mr. Persinger's homeroom begins on Wed. 5/1, followed by Mrs. Wood's homeroom on Thurs. 5/2 and my homeroom on Fri. 5/3. All classes will be testing from 10:30 - 12:30. Please ensure you are getting lots of rest this week and eat a healthy breakfast!
